Manchester United to Honor Victims of Manchester Synagogue Attack with Silence and Black Armbands
Manchester United will observe a minute’s silence and wear black armbands during their upcoming home match to commemorate the victims of a recent terrorist attack outside a synagogue in Manchester that resulted in two fatalities.
In a disturbance outside Heaton Park Synagogue, Syrian-born assailant Jihad Al-Shamie was shot dead by police during his violent rampage, which also led to the death of two Jewish men. One of the victims, identified as Adrian Daulby, was helping to guard the synagogue and was struck by a gunshot wound, while the other, Melvin Cravitz, was shot and died at the scene. Police confirmed that both men were shot by officers, with one suffering a bullet wound in the leg and the other in the stomach.
Authorities revealed that Al-Shamie, who was 35 and came to the UK as a child, was not armed with a gun at the time of the incident. He was also unknown to security agencies before the attack. The police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for investigation, and post-mortem examinations are scheduled.
Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, expressed his concern about the current climate, emphasizing their tribute to the victims and the importance of unity. The team will don black armbands for their match against Sunderland. Meanwhile, Manchester City is set to play at Brentford on Sunday, with any tributes still to be announced. There are no plans for a league-wide minute’s silence this weekend.
Police officials stated that both victims were trying to prevent the attacker from entering the synagogue when they were shot. One was confirmed dead upon arrival, and the other succumbed later at the hospital. The assailant was shot dead during police response. The incident has prompted a period of mourning and reflection within the community.
Manchester United players paused for a moment of silence in September to honor Ricky Hatton.
