Amorim Fires Back: Not the Issue as Rooney & Neville Criticize; Faces Job Pressure
Ruben Amorim Responds to Criticism Amidst Manchester United Troubles
Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, has addressed recent criticism from former players Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville. Despite mounting pressure, Amorim openly acknowledged he cannot escape the results of his team’s performances, emphasizing that last season’s outcomes are no longer relevant to current discussions.
The team faces Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Amorim under scrutiny following five Premier League losses and an exit from the Carabao Cup to Grimsby. Rooney expressed doubts about Amorim’s ability to improve United’s season, while Neville criticized his stubbornness and rigidity, particularly regarding the 3-4-2-1 formation.
In response, Amorim defended his tactical approach, asserting that his system’s effectiveness varies and that a loss doesn’t necessarily point to a flawed strategy. “It’s not about the system—it depends on the game situations,” he said. “If we lost to Arsenal, for example, it’s not solely because of our setup. Our approach has worked in some matches and not in others.”
He emphasized that the team’s recent results cannot be solely attributed to tactics, suggesting other factors influence outcomes. Despite the pressure, Amorim remains confident and is preparing his team for a challenging encounter, acknowledging that Sunderland is in good form and confident.
Additionally, Amorim shared that Manchester United will pay tribute to the victims of the Manchester synagogue attack during Saturday’s game, expressing sympathy amidst a turbulent period for the club.
