Gareth Ainsworth on Surgery, Gillingham Offer & Unconventional Tactics to Boost Title Charge
Gareth Ainsworth’s Transformative Year
Gareth Ainsworth has experienced two pivotal moments this year—one filled with struggle, and the other providing perspective. The first was a challenging period at Shrewsbury Town, where despite efforts, the club remained at the bottom of League One during his tenure. After five wins in 22 games, the club offered him a contract extension, recognizing his dedication.
However, a more compelling opportunity arose when he received a call from Gillingham, then in 19th place in League Two, led by American owners Brad and Shannon Galinson. Ainsworth was drawn to their ambitious plans and desire to build a successful future, which ultimately convinced him to leave Shrewsbury.

Since his arrival in March, Ainsworth has significantly improved Gillingham’s fortunes. With only one loss in 21 games, he has helped the team break the club record with a 21-match unbeaten streak, now sitting third in League Two. His leadership has fostered a unified team ethic, with the squad showing high morale and contribution from all players.
“It’s gone very well,” Ainsworth states, praising the players’ buy-in and the strong squad dynamic. His efforts have made the team perform above their recent standards, with notable progress since the previous seasons’ lower finishes.
The Second Life-Changing Event
In a turn that highlights how quickly life can change, Ainsworth is set to undergo open-heart surgery following a health issue identified during the League Managers’ Association’s annual check. He expects a month’s recovery, with long-time assistant Richard Dobson stepping in temporarily. Despite the procedure, Ainsworth remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of early detection and resilience.
“It’s a big operation, but necessary. Many people have this without knowing,” he explains. “I’m positive everything will be fine, and I’ll be back with renewed energy.”
Ainsworth’s commitment to his role remains unwavering. His approach involves comprehensive squad management, fostering team spirit through unique development activities, and investing in club facilities to motivate players. His passion and hands-on attitude continue to drive Gillingham forward, even in challenging times.
