Xabi Alonso Denies Refusing to Play Amid Real Madrid Dressing Room Rift
Federico Valverde Denies Refusal to Play and Clarifies Relationship with Xabi Alonso
Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has dismissed rumors suggesting he refused to participate in their recent Champions League match, emphasizing his good rapport with coach Xabi Alonso. Valverde was an unused substitute during the 5-0 victory over Kairat Almaty, a match in which he attended the pre-match press conference and openly expressed his discomfort with the right-back role, stating, “I wasn’t born to play right-back.” Despite this, he clarified that his absence from the game was planned beforehand.
Spanish media scrutinized Valverde’s conduct on the bench, noting his distant posture with arms behind his back, while other substitutes like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga actively engaged. Bellingham was seen conversing with Valverde, who later remained seated, aware he would not be called upon by the coach.
Valverde responded on social media, strongly denying allegations of a rift with Alonso or refusing to play. “I’ve read damaging articles about me,” he wrote. “I know I’ve had poor performances, but I’ve always given my best, even playing through injuries and fractures without complaint. I have a good relationship with the coach and am always willing to adapt to any position on the field.”
He previously voiced his reluctance to assume the right-back role, explaining he didn’t grow up learning that position. “I felt comfortable in those games, but I lack certain qualities like closing down the defense,” Valverde admitted. However, he emphasized his commitment to the team, stating, “I am available for whatever the coach needs.”
Post-match, teammate Fran Garcia acknowledged Valverde’s visible frustration at being benched. Alonso addressed concerns about Vinicius Jr.’s reaction to being substituted, confirming the Brazilian star was not upset and that disruptive behavior was not present on this occasion. Vinicius, who has scored three goals and provided four assists this season, has occasionally shown frustration when replaced but remains an integral part of the squad.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe continues to shine for Paris Saint-Germain with 13 goals in nine matches, overshadowing Vinicius in individual performances. Real Madrid’s campaign started strongly with two Champions League wins, and they sit second in La Liga, just behind Barcelona.
