Steve Kerr Feels ‘Comfortable’ Entering Contract Year—Reassessing Deal in Offseason

Golden State Warriors Coach Eyes Future Amid Contract Uncertainty

The current successful phase of the Golden State Warriors appears to be approaching its end, with head coach Steve Kerr aware of the team’s shifting landscape. Kerr, who has won five NBA championships as a player and led the Warriors to four titles since 2014, is in the final year of his contract with a two-year, $35 million extension signed in February 2024.

Expressing confidence, Kerr stated he’s comfortable with the situation and sees no reason to worry about his contract status as the 2025-26 season begins. He emphasized that his approach aligns with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy, and that any future decisions will be handled with respect and gratitude, regardless of the outcome.

The team still boasts two of their core stars from their championship-winning era: veteran guard Klay Thompson, who recently agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks, and the remaining trio of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler. Curry (37), Butler (36), and Green (35) are all signed through the 2026-27 season, ensuring at least a two-year window for a potential title push.

Additionally, recent good news includes the report of 22-year-old Jonathan Kuminga signing a two-year, $48.5 million deal to remain with the Warriors—a move that could either bolster their current roster or facilitate a strategic trade in the future.

Unlike last season, when Kerr negotiated an in-season extension, no such discussions are anticipated this time around. Kerr reiterated his strong relationship with the organization, stating, “There’s no reason for concern,” and emphasizing his love for coaching and hope for continuity. Ultimately, he feels that waiting until the end of the season to evaluate the future is a sensible approach, allowing the team to determine the best path forward.
