Michigan Church Shooter Thomas Sanford’s Unhinged Obsession with Mormons
Michigan Man Attacks LDS Church Due to Obsession and Anti-Mormon Views
Thomas Sanford, responsible for the deadly attack on a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, harbored a disturbing fixation on the Mormon faith. Friends indicate he believed Mormons intended to “take over the world.” His intense aversion may have stemmed from a failed relationship with a devout Mormon woman from Utah, who once pressured him to join the church.
Sanford’s struggles escalated while living in Utah, after serving as a Marine with deployment in Iraq. During this period, he developed methamphetamine addiction, which many say hardened his previously friendly nature. Upon returning to Michigan, his attitude toward Mormons turned hostile, frequently expressing belief that they were the “Antichrist” and had sinister intentions.
He often shared these views openly with friends, even during a wedding he attended. Close friends recall his obsession with Mormons, describing conversations where Sanford dismissed their faith as an attempt by the “Antichrist” to take over the world. His disdain extended to disparaging the Mormon Bible, which includes additional texts not accepted by mainstream Christians, and asserting he was a true Christian who prioritized Jesus.
Just a week before the attack, Sanford’s anti-Mormon sentiment was evident during a chance encounter with a local candidate. He questioned the candidate about Mormon beliefs for nearly 15 minutes, reflecting his deep-seated prejudice.
Despite his hostility, Sanford appeared to show concern for his young son during conversations, highlighting a complex and conflicting personality. However, on September 28, Sanford drove his pickup truck into the front of a Mormon church, igniting the structure and opening fire on congregants — resulting in four deaths and eight injuries.
The attack was the culmination of Sanford’s growing obsession and cumulative anger, fueled by his personal history and intense animosity toward the Mormon faith.
