Man United Eye Saudi Friendly to Boost Revenue After Missing £85m Champions League Prize
Manchester United Considering Mid-Season Friendly in Saudi Arabia
Manchester United are reportedly in discussions to organize a friendly match in Saudi Arabia during the mid-season break, aiming to boost revenue. This potential fixture would be played during one of the available midweeks amid an unusually free schedule for the club this season.
The move comes after Manchester United’s recent setbacks, including their failure to qualify for European tournaments following their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham last season. Additionally, their early exit from the Carabao Cup after a surprising loss to League Two’s Grimsby Town reflected challenges faced during the season.
A friendly in Saudi Arabia could be financially advantageous for the club, providing lucrative match-day revenues and an opportunity for warm-weather training in winter. Previous clubs, like Newcastle United, have already traveled there for training purposes.
The possibility of facing Cristiano Ronaldo, who now plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, adds further interest to such an event. Ronaldo, a former Manchester United star, would be a high-profile opponent should the friendly materialize.
While no formal agreement has been finalized, there are upcoming parts of the European season in November and December that could serve as windows for this friendly encounter. The club’s management would need to ensure compliance with Premier League regulations, which restrict scheduling friendlies during the season to avoid conflicts with league fixtures.
Manchester United’s financial strategy continues to emphasize revenue growth amid a challenging on-field performance. Last season, despite finishing 15th in the Premier League, the club posted record revenue of £666.5 million, though it still reported a £33 million loss. The club’s debt remains significant, although it decreased slightly due to currency fluctuations.
In the recent transfer window, Manchester United invested around £200 million in new players, including Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. Despite these efforts, the team has struggled early in the league, currently sitting 14th with only a few wins.
