Single Mother Killed by Stray Bullet on NOLA Birthday Trip

Tragedy on Bourbon Street: Mom Shot and Killed by Stray Bullet

A devastating shooting occurred early Sunday morning along New Orleans’ renowned Bourbon Street, ending the life of Jessica Williams, a 33-year-old mother visiting the city from Chicago. During a night of celebrations for her birthday, she was struck by a stray bullet amidst a chaotic gunfire exchange.

Williams, who was in the city with family to mark her special day, was bumped off while they were returning to their hotel after enjoying the sights and nightlife in the French Quarter. She was celebrating her birthday with her siblings, cousins, and other relatives when violence erupted.

According to witnesses, a fight between two men escalated into a gunfight that resulted in multiple shots being fired into the crowd. Police reports confirm that at least one weapon was pulled during the altercation, with bullets hitting three individuals, including Williams and her younger sister. Williams died at the scene, while the other victims were hospitalized for their injuries.

Her family, particularly her cousin Kardajia Wells, expressed heartbreak over the loss, emphasizing that Williams was simply out to celebrate with loved ones. “We just wanted to have fun and honor her birthday, but it turned into a nightmare,” Wells said.

Authorities are searching for a suspect described as a “heavyset black male” seen wearing a black and white hoodie at the scene. Several individuals, including two women and a man, have been questioned but no arrests have been made yet.

Williams’ family, many of whom witnessed the tragedy firsthand, are now focused on supporting her young children and coping with this unimaginable loss. Wells remarked, emotionally, that despite her hopes for healing, she finds it difficult to see how she will move forward from this heartbreak.
