NYC Supermarket Worker, 64, Dies After Scuffle with Heineken Thief
Manhattan Supermarket Worker Dies Following Confrontation with Shoplifter
Leobardo Hernandez, a 64-year-old supermarket employee, tragically passed away after a struggle with a shoplifter last week in Manhattan. Hernandez, a father of four, was working the overnight shift at Morton Williams on Ninth Avenue near West 58th Street when he spotted a suspect attempting to steal a six-pack of Heineken around 9:15 p.m.
Confronting the thief, Hernandez was involved in a physical altercation. During the fight, he was punched in the chest and later found lying on a milk crate inside the store. Emergency services rushed him to a hospital, but he died from his injuries. The suspect ultimately dropped the beer and fled the scene but remains at large.
Hernandez’s family described him as the backbone of their family, someone who cared for others without hesitation. His son, Henry, shared that he received a panic-stricken call from his sister about his father’s condition, and he rushed to the hospital to find out he had died. Hernandez had moved to the U.S. from Mexico in pursuit of the American Dream and was heavily involved in his family’s life.
Autopsy reports indicated Hernandez had a slightly enlarged heart, plaque buildup, and existing health issues. Investigators are exploring whether the stress from the incident contributed to his death. His family has started a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses and transport his remains to Mexico, where he wished to be buried.
His employer, Morton Williams, expressed their condolences, calling Hernandez a valued team member for over ten years. The company highlighted his dedication and offered prayers for his family during this difficult time.
