Liverpool Fans Booed and Fireworks Fired Outside Reds Hotel Ahead of Champions League Clash
Liverpool Fans Question UEFA Conditions Ahead of Champions League Match in Istanbul
Liverpool supporters have expressed strong criticism of UEFA over the challenging conditions they face ahead of the upcoming Champions League fixture against Galatasaray. The match is scheduled for Tuesday night at RAMS Park in Istanbul, with a capacity of nearly 54,000 fans.
Travel and Security Concerns
The club’s travel guidelines outline that supporters must use 30 free buses departing from Sultanahmet Square at 6:00 pm, with an expected journey of about an hour. The buses lack toilet facilities and are not accessible for those with mobility issues, and supporters are required to surrender personal items such as power banks, headphones, and makeup for security reasons. Fans have voiced displeasure, highlighting the uncomfortable logistics, including long bus rides with no amenities.
Fan Treatment and UEFA Complaints
Members of the Liverpool Supporters Union, Spirit of Shankly, have condemned UEFA for what they describe as “degrading” treatment. Despite raising concerns about fans being subjected to searches and restrictions—like losing power banks or medical supplies—these issues remain unresolved. They also criticized the inconsistent handling of supporters, referencing similar problems faced by Manchester United and Tottenham fans in Istanbul. The group emphasized that UEFA had previously promised reforms following issues during the 2022 Champions League final in Paris, but little had changed.
Concerns About Fan Safety and Atmosphere
There are additional worries about fan safety and the hostile atmosphere created by Galatasaray supporters. Before the match, fans reportedly set off fireworks outside Liverpool’s hotel in an attempt to disturb their sleep, highlighting the tense environment.
Liverpool aims to build on their recent 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid, while Galatasaray hopes to improve after a heavy 5-1 defeat in their opening game of the season.
