Knicks Owner James Dolan Backs Ex-Manhattan Prosecutor to Unseat DA Bragg

James Dolan Confirms Support for Candidate Diana Florence in Manhattan DA Race

In an exclusive interview, Knicks owner James Dolan revealed he is the mystery billionaire supporter backing independent candidate Diana Florence in her bid to become Manhattan District Attorney. Dolan expressed his support due to concerns over rising violent crime in the neighborhood around Madison Square Garden, which he cited as influencing his decision.

Florence, a seasoned prosecutor with 25 years of experience in the Manhattan DA’s Office, positions herself as a tough-on-crime candidate, criticizing the current DA, Alvin Bragg, for being too lenient and surrendering streets to repeat offenders. She emphasized the importance of giving judges discretion to incarcerate persistent misdemeanants and highlighted issues like public drug use, public indecency, and increased store thefts, which she claims began after Bragg took office.

Dolan commented that crime negatively impacts his business and employees’ safety, which motivated his backing. He admitted to being Florence’s secret supporter, noting the rise in crime as a significant factor. Dolan has invested in her campaign through super PACs associated with his media and sports ventures, and his endorsement has become a campaign talking point for Florence.

Florence also reflected on her past resignation from the DA’s Office in 2020, which she attributed to a lack of support amid allegations she withheld evidence—claims she dismisses as misunderstandings due to new law changes. Despite this, she maintains a long record of fighting for New Yorkers and declared her intention to bring change to the office.

When asked about her opponent, Bragg’s Republican challenger Maud Maron, Dolan explained that Manhattan’s voting patterns make it unlikely a Republican could win here. He believes Florence is the right person for the role, foreseeing her ability to enact meaningful reform.

Bragg’s campaign dismissed Florence’s criticisms, defending his record of crime reduction and victim support, while criticizing her resignation and campaign’s fundraising tactics. The race remains highly charged as voters prepare for the November election.
