Climber Survives Mountain Fall Thanks to Helmet

An experienced Montana rock climber narrowly escaped a deadly injury after being struck by a large boulder while climbing at Confluence Crag near Custer Gallatin National Forest. The accident occurred when a friend accidentally dislodged a microwave-sized rock, which then struck Boehm in the head.

Following the impact, Boehm fell approximately 50 feet, sustaining multiple injuries including a broken collarbone, seven broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a severe gash on his back. Despite the severity of his injuries, he remained conscious and was rescued from the rugged terrain by a team including local fire and search-and-rescue crews.

His helmet played a crucial role in protecting his head during the fall.

Doctors at the Billings Clinic confirmed that without his helmet, Boehm could have suffered a catastrophic brain injury. He credits the safety gear with saving his life, stating, “If I didn’t have my helmet on, I wouldn’t be here today.” Despite the dingy appearance of his helmet, its protective qualities were undeniable.

Remaining alert during rescue, Boehm expressed both admiration for the rescue team and relief. The difficult terrain made the rescue challenging but ultimately successful. After recovery, he remains optimistic about returning to climbing and emphasizes that he will always wear a helmet from now on.
