McConaughey’s 4-Year-Old Sparks Marriage with a Blunt Question

Matthew McConaughey Shares How His Son Inspired Him to Marry Camila Alves

Matthew McConaughey revealed that his marriage to Camila Alves was prompted by an insightful question from their young son. During a podcast, he recounted that when their son Levi was four, he asked why his mother didn’t carry the same last name as him.

He shared, “I was thinking, ‘You’re only 4, man,’ and explained that since they weren’t married at the time, she didn’t change her name. When you get married, you switch your last name.”

Levi, now 17, later asked his father if he was scared to take the plunge into marriage. McConaughey admitted he felt fear but sought guidance from his pastor before deciding to tie the knot, which he later described as the bigger risk compared to continuing their non-married life.

McConaughey recalled telling Levi that marriage posed a significant risk and sought advice from his pastor.

He and Alves met in 2006 at a Los Angeles nightclub, confirmed their relationship a year later, and married in 2012. Together, they have three children: Levi (born 2008), Vida (born 2010), and Livingston (born 2012).

Levi, who asked his dad if he was “scared,” is now 17 and shares a strong bond with his family.

In his new book, “Poems & Prayers,” McConaughey explains that the secret to their enduring marriage lies in simple daily habits. One tip he offers is replacing their oversized mattress with a smaller queen-sized bed, which he believes fosters closeness and better connection.

He humorously shares, “I wake up and it’s like Camila’s a football field away. Moving to a queen-size bed has made a positive difference for our marriage,” emphasizing that small changes can have meaningful impacts.
