Former Liverpool Women’s Manager Matt Beard Dies by Suicide at 47
Matt Beard, a renowned figure in women’s football and former manager of Liverpool Women’s team, was tragically found hanged at his residence. The coroner’s court confirmed his cause of death, which was discovered after paramedics were called to his home in Deeside, Flintshire.
Beard, aged 47, passed away at the Countess of Chester Hospital on Saturday evening. The investigation revealed that he suffered a fatal brain injury due to hanging. An inquest into his death has been scheduled for a later date.
Throughout his 17-year coaching career, Beard managed Liverpool twice and achieved notable success, winning consecutive league titles in 2013 and 2014. His most recent position was with Burnley, although he resigned after only two months in the role.
The football community has expressed profound grief over his passing. Manchester United manager Marc Skinner called him an ‘icon’ of women’s football, highlighting the admiration many felt for him.
His brother, Mark, praised Beard as ‘the most amazing, caring man who was loved by everyone who knew him.’ His son, Harry, shared heartfelt tributes, posting photos and writing: “Love you dad, 1978-2025. Always missed.”
In a separate message, Harry urged others to seek help if struggling, saying, “Suicide is never the answer. Reach out. Call 111, or 999. Please don’t take your own life.”
Following his death, football clubs paid tribute. Liverpool’s women’s team honored him by singing “Matt Beard’s Mighty Reds” during a recent match, with fans holding a banner that read, “Liverpool was made for Matt and Matt was made for Liverpool.”
Defender Jenna Clark reflected on Beard’s impact, sharing that the team had been reminiscing about his stories and personality, describing him as a joyful character who would have appreciated their memories.
