Mass Shooting at Michigan LDS Church Results in Four Fatalities
Authorities responded swiftly to a shooting at a church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, arriving on the scene within 30 seconds. The gunman was neutralized within minutes of the attack, which took place during a Sunday service.
The incident occurred around 10:25 a.m., as many parishioners were gathered for worship. The shooter, identified as 40-year-old Iraq War veteran Thomas Sanford, drove a truck covered with American flags into the church and opened fire with an assault rifle.
Four people were killed, and eight others sustained injuries, with one victim still in critical condition. During the chaos, the church was also set ablaze. Authorities found multiple improvised explosive devices at the site, which are now under investigation by bomb squad units.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing at least four bodies covered with yellow tarps in the aftermath. Several children were injured, including a young girl shot in the back. Some residents near the church described a tragic scene of loss immediately following the attack.
When police arrived, they found Sanford’s truck, which he used in the attack, decorated with American flags. The quick police response faced praise from officials, with Police Chief William Renye stating that officers and a nearby Department of Natural Resources worker arrived within 32 seconds and stopped Sanford in the church parking lot at 10:33 a.m.
Investigators are exploring whether Sanford’s actions are connected to the recent death of the LDS church’s longtime president, Russell M. Nelson, who passed away at age 101 on Saturday.
Authorities plan to release further updates, with a follow-up expected at 8 p.m. EST. This story is developing; stay tuned for more information.
