Ex-Clown Texas Teacher Dies in Court Before Sentencing for Wife’s Murder

Man Dies After Drug Overdose During Court Hearing for Wife’s Murder

A former special education teacher turned clown died suddenly in court after ingesting drugs, just before he was sentenced to prison for his involvement in his wife’s murder.

James Paul Anderson, 39, experienced a medical crisis on Friday morning at the Houston Criminal Justice Center. He was awaiting sentencing for the 2023 shooting death of his wife, Victoria Anderson, 34. Instead of receiving his sentence, he was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:05 a.m.

According to officials, Anderson apparently took drugs while at the courthouse. A bailiff administered naloxone, an overdose reversal drug, before he was transported. An autopsy is now underway to determine the cause of death.

Witnesses reported that, moments before collapsing, Anderson spoke briefly with his defense lawyer, then asked for a moment alone before spitting something into a trash bin. He soon began vomiting. Reports indicate he may have taken a crystal-like substance, possibly meth, which was found in a nearby trash can by Anderson’s attorney.

James Anderson suffered a fatal medical emergency shortly before his sentencing for his wife’s murder.

Police had previously responded to Anderson’s home after his wife reported him threatening her with a firearm, leading to a standoff that ended with Anderson’s arrest on September 24, 2023. During that incident, gunfire was heard, and she was found shot dead in their Kingwood residence later that day.

Anderson, previously a teacher in Cleveland, was known as “Mister Jazzz” when he worked as a clown. He had been arrested after police responded to his wife’s plea for help, which included a report of gunfire. After this incident, Anderson barricaded himself inside with his wife’s body before surrendering hours later.

Authorities noted there had been prior reports of domestic disputes, and that Victoria Anderson had filed for divorce about a month before her death.
