Serena Williams Displays Cotton Art at Home Before Hotel Comments
Serena Williams Showcases Art and Critics Cotton Decorations
Serena Williams recently shared a striking art piece in her Florida home—an sculpture titled “Monument for a Promise” by the late artist Radcliffe Bailey, created in 2013. The artwork features a donkey carrying a trunk, standing over a mound of cotton, and is part of her curated collection of powerful Black art objects.
Williams expressed great admiration for the sculpture, describing her home’s interior as “like walking into an art gallery.” She has integrated the piece into her foyer and formal sitting room, which she transformed into a colorful space filled with eclectic art pieces. Her husband, Alexis Ohanian, has also posted about the sculpture on Instagram, highlighting its significance within their shared artistic environment.
Bailey’s work is celebrated for assembling an influential body of art using objects from Black history, including family archives, Georgian red clay, shipping tarp, and African figurines. His sculptural installations—some monumental in scale—reflect a broad continuum of Black cultural narratives. Bailey passed away in late 2023, leaving behind a legacy rooted in the meaningful use of everyday objects to explore heritage.
Williams previously visited her home’s art-filled interior in a 2021 profile, describing her passion for her collection. The sculpture’s presence in her house demonstrates her appreciation for art that holds cultural significance.
Recently, Williams shared her thoughts on the use of cotton as home decor. She posted on her Instagram Story, standing in a Manhattan hotel hallway where a cotton plant was displayed on an entryway table. She questioned the aesthetics, saying, “How do we feel about cotton as decoration? Personally, for me, it doesn’t feel great,” and plucked a cotton ball from the branch, commenting that it felt like nail polish remover cotton.
