Rude Judge Resigns After Threats
NYC Judge Resigns Amid Investigation, Joins Top Law Firm
A veteran New York City judge, accused of misconduct including threatening staff and practicing law unlawfully while serving on the bench, has quietly stepped down and secured a prominent position at a leading corporate law firm.
Justice Louis Nock, who held positions in Manhattan and Brooklyn courts since 2015, was under scrutiny by the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct for serious allegations. These included abusive behavior toward court staff, threats of criminal complaints against staff, and misuse of his judicial position to promote private interests. Notably, Nock allegedly threatened to file grievances against commission staff unless charges against him were dropped.
The complaint history began in 2024, with reports that Nock frequently behaved in a demeaning and unprofessional manner. He was also investigated for providing legal services out-of-state—prohibited for full-time judges—and for using a personal email account with a judiciary-inspired name to conduct private business.
Adding to the controversy, Nock was criticized for declining to order a psychiatric evaluation for a defendant involved in a stalking case, after the judge’s colleague highlighted the inexplicable decision.
Facing ongoing allegations, Nock chose to resign after Labor Day in a farewell letter expressing appreciation for his career and personal life. “It has been the greatest honor of my life,” he stated, noting his desire to spend more time with family.
Despite stepping down, Nock’s career continues as he joins Anderson Kill, a prestigious law firm, as a shareholder in its corporate and commercial litigation division. His attorney defended his record, asserting that Nock believed the complaints had no basis and that his move into private practice was anticipated long before the investigation.
Nock’s recent resignation ends a notable judicial career, with some questioning the circumstances of his departure, yet he appears poised to focus on his new legal endeavors.
