Rio Ferdinand on Andre Onana’s Loan Move: Man United’s £47m Flop Out!

Rio Ferdinand Comments on Andre Onana’s Loan Departure from Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand expressed approval regarding Andre Onana’s upcoming loan move away from Manchester United after two seasons with the club.

The goalkeeper has agreed to join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, which will see him receive increased compensation through signing bonuses and incentives. United will not receive a loan fee, nor is there an option for the Turkish club to purchase Onana at the end of the term.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that all necessary documents are signed, and Onana has approved the transfer, signaling United’s effort to reshape their squad under manager Ruben Amorim. Ferdinand welcomed the decision, stating that the club is making clear they won’t keep players who don’t meet their standards.

Addressing rumors about Onana’s team status, Ferdinand said, “It’s not even a debate,” emphasizing the club’s stance on maintaining high standards and removing players who no longer fit the club’s vision. He highlighted that previous financial issues forced United to retain underperforming players, but now they are making decisive changes.

During the summer transfer window, Manchester United moved five players, with four leaving either permanently or on loan. Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on loan, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho secured temporary and permanent exits respectively, while Anthony moved to Real Betis. Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, Victor Lindelof, and Christian Eriksen also departed.

Ferdinand added that the club’s reshaping sends a positive message about accountability, where players who aren’t deemed suitable are encouraged to leave. He reinforced the idea that if a player wishes to exit, they should be allowed to do so, “It should work both ways.”
