California Beachgoers Save Boys Trapped in Water-Filled Sand Hole
Children Rescued After Sand Hole Floods at Newport Beach
Recently, a harrowing incident at Newport Beach involved two boys who became trapped after the water flooding their self-made sand hole caused the walls to collapse. Witnesses captured the distressing moment as beachgoers and lifeguards worked together to free the children from the wet sand.
The children had been digging near the water’s edge when waves entered their large hole, quickly causing the sand to become heavy and cave in. The boys, who appeared to be laughing earlier, suddenly found themselves trapped from the waist down, with their upper bodies still free.
Beach spectators watched anxiously as three adults desperately attempted to pull the boys free. Amid the chaos, someone was heard urgently calling for a lifeguard, prompting two lifeguards to rush over and jump into action. After a tense struggle, the boys were finally rescued from the collapsing sand.
One of the rescuers commented that the boys were fortunate their upper bodies weren’t submerged, which could have led to a more severe injury. Lifeguard Capt. Mark Herman explained that once the sand gets wet, it becomes significantly heavier and can quickly bury someone from the waist down, making escape difficult.
Herman also cautioned that shallow holes, if not properly managed, can collapse with little warning, especially during rising tides. Previous reports indicate that from 1997 to 2007, there were over 50 cases of people buried in collapsing sand, with 31 fatalities in that period, highlighting the lurking danger on beaches.
Witnesses like Brittney Hood expressed relief that the children survived and emphasized the importance of beach safety. Herman urged visitors to always exercise caution—since even seemingly shallow holes can suddenly cave in, especially when the tide is rising.
