Cory Booker Explains Why Republicans Will Cause a Government Shutdown

Senator Cory Booker Stands Firm Against Trump’s Influence and Government Shutdown

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has been a prominent voice in the Senate advocating for stopping President Trump’s corruption and addressing the detrimental policies affecting Americans. As the deadline for government funding approaches at the end of the month, Democratic colleagues are increasingly insisting on preventing a government shutdown unless the Trump administration’s agenda is held in check.

During an interview on NBC’s Meet The Press, Kristen Welker inquired about the potential for a shutdown amid recent job reports showing lower-than-expected employment gains, and whether Democrats might risk a shutdown to block what they see as Trump’s lawlessness. She referenced Senator Chris Murphy, who questioned whether Democrats should vote for a budget that fails to curb Trump’s corruption.

When asked if he would support a government shutdown to advance Democratic priorities, Booker responded clearly:

If there’s a shutdown, responsibility lies with the Republicans, who control both the White House and Congress. They would be the ones to shut things down. The traditional way to pass a budget has been through bipartisan cooperation.

However, our current president dismisses bipartisanship. He disregards the independence of federal agencies and even targets political opponents like Adam Schiff. Trump’s actions demonstrate a lack of morals necessary for cooperation, and he’s harming Americans in the process. I refuse to vote for a budget that would hurt residents of New Jersey or the nation as a whole.

It’s important to note that the premise of Welker’s question—that a shutdown might be inevitable—was contested, emphasizing the need for responsible leadership and bipartisan efforts to prevent government dysfunction.
