Yassamin Ansari Claps Back at Critics Over ‘Constituents’ Comment
Arizona Congressman Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Voting and Immigration
Representative Yassamin Ansari from Arizona caused a stir on social media after expressing her disregard for whether her constituents can vote for her, during a critique of immigration policies.
At a Capitol Hill press conference, Ansari clarified her use of the word “constituents” when criticizing immigration enforcement. She explained that her definition includes anyone in her community, regardless of legal status—be they asylum seekers, Green Card holders, citizens, or residents. She emphasized her priority of ensuring government treatment of all individuals with dignity, irrespective of their voting eligibility.
“Constituent does not mean voter. I don’t care if none of these individuals can vote for me. I care about making sure that taxpayer dollars are used to treat people with respect,” she stated.
Her comments drew criticism, notably from Republican Rep. Pat Harrigan, who accused her of lacking basic understanding, highlighting her admitted need to look up “constituent.” Harrigan also questioned her focus on a district resident with leukemia, suggesting her claims were exaggerated; she countered, citing the woman’s struggles with medical denial and her condition.
Social media reactions included frustrations about her stance, with critics emphasizing the importance of representing American citizens first. Ansari defended her approach, stating her goal is to show empathy and uphold constitutional values, regardless of whether individuals can vote or not.
“I believe in representing all residents, regardless of immigration status,” she remarked, highlighting her commitment to humane treatment for everyone in her district.
