Florida Woman Survives Alligator Attack While Boating

A Florida optometrist was attacked by an 8-foot alligator while on a boat ride in the St. Lucie River, resulting in severe injuries to her arm. Amber Perren, 27, was suddenly seized by the reptile as she lowered her hand into the water to wet her hair. The encounter turned into a frantic struggle involving her husband and the gator, which was eventually subdued.

According to Perren, she faced the gator head-to-head during the attack. “I saw the gator’s eye to eye,” she recalled. “My instinct was to escape. I was punching its head and trying to run.” Her husband, Kelby, leapt into the water upon hearing her screams and managed to pull her free after battling the creature, which measured roughly 8 feet in full length and had a head about 2 feet long.

Kelby helped his wife to their boat and nearby dock, where responders swiftly treated her wounds before airlifting her to a trauma center. She sustained broken bones in her forearm, a severed artery, and significant tissue damage. Though she retains some movement in her fingers, her hand remains numb and faces possible additional surgeries due to compartment syndrome caused by swelling.

Amber Perren, 27, has undergone multiple surgeries following the attack.

Amber’s injuries included damage to the radial artery and broken bones, but she praised her husband for saving her life. “He’s my hero,” she said. The alligator was later captured. Despite the trauma, Perren is determined to resume her water activities, though she will avoid that particular area.

Reflecting on the incident, Perren emphasized how quickly life can change in an instant. “This showed us how rapid events can alter your life,” she stated. “So, go enjoy the water — just stay safe.”
