AOC Warns Republicans: Democrats Won’t Bargain to Keep Government Open

Democratic Leaders Emphasize Conditions for Supporting Government Funding

The government faces a funding deadline at the end of this month, with Republicans still lacking the necessary votes and a clear plan to pass legislation to keep it operational. It appears that Democratic support will be essential to avoid a shutdown.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) expressed her stance during an interview, stating that any Democratic backing for a bill to fund the government would come with specific conditions. She referenced comments by Elizabeth Warren, highlighting recent Republican-led austerity measures, including significant cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and food assistance programs like SNAP, WIC, and EBT, enacted before August.

AOC emphasized that Republicans, who control the House, Senate, and the presidency, are ultimately responsible for maintaining government operations. She argued that Democrats shouldn’t support funding bills without negotiations on reversing these cuts. According to her, Democrats should leverage this moment to advocate for restoring essential programs for vulnerable populations.

“They have less than 30 days to fund the government,” she noted, urging her colleagues to use this opportunity to fight for people’s benefits and ensure vital social safety net programs are preserved.

AOC’s perspective aligns with a broader call for strategic negotiations, emphasizing accountability and the importance of supporting citizens dependent on federal assistance while addressing the current political impasse.
