NYC Principal ‘Creepy Bill’ Accused of Groping and Sending Harassing Texts to Staff
New Lawsuit Accuses NYC High School Principal of Sexual Misconduct
William Bassell, 66, the principal of the Academy of American Studies in Queens since 2011, faces a fresh lawsuit alleging severe sexual misconduct. The plaintiff, a female staff member who remains employed at the school, claims Bassell groomed her and subjected her to relentless harassment, including inappropriate touching and suggestive messages.
The suit details that Bassell sent over 30,000 provocative texts, including comments about her body and sex life, and once groped her breast outside a school prom despite her protests. He also reportedly touched her inner thigh repeatedly and made intimate remarks, creating a hostile environment. One troubling message highlighted in the lawsuit reads, “You know what you can do with that tongue don’t you…,” accompanied by a tongue emoji.
The lawsuit describes Bassell as initially appearing friendly, but soon revealing a controlling and predatory nature. He allegedly pressured her for private meetings, discussed her pubic hair, and made suggestive comments related to her marital relationship. During a prom event in 2024, Bassell allegedly groped her breast while pretending to adjust her dress, creating a distressing confrontation.
The woman reported the misconduct to her union and the police, leading to Bassell’s arrest on five counts of sexual abuse. He was placed on leave but remains employed by the city, earning over $200,000 annually.
Defending himself, Bassell’s attorney denies the allegations, stating he is cooperating to clarify the truth. The case remains ongoing, with court proceedings scheduled for November.
The allegations sparked concern among parents and students, with remarks emphasizing that someone with Bassell’s conduct should not be around students. Some expressed surprise upon learning about claims dating back years, including a previous incident at the Met Opera nine years ago involving a 17-year-old student.
