Erik ten Hag’s Short and Tumultuous Tenure at Bayer Leverkusen

Erik ten Hag’s time as Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach was marked by internal discord and a rapid exit after only three league matches. The Dutch coach, previously at Manchester United, was taken aback by the club’s sudden decision to dismiss him after a brief and unsuccessful spell.

Appointed in June to replace Xabi Alonso, who was set to join Real Madrid, Ten Hag struggled to secure a win in his two Bundesliga games. His team suffered a defeat to Hoffenheim and a loss after leading 3-1 against Werder Bremen, leading club officials to conclude that their current setup was ineffective in creating a successful squad.

Reports indicate tensions with the club’s hierarchy surfaced as early as July, particularly concerning the sale of key players like Granit Xhaka, whom Ten Hag reportedly wanted to keep but was publicly vetoed by club management. Despite Xhaka’s commitment to a five-year contract, he soon transferred to Sunderland, highlighting internal disagreements.

Fans and staff were reportedly baffled by Ten Hag’s unconventional training methods, which included mandatory press-ups that took precedence over regular drills. His decisions, like declining to address the team before their opening game, drew criticism and questions about his managerial style, especially considering his previous success at Ajax.

His departure will likely be viewed as a costly mistake for the club, costing approximately £72,000 per day in severance after receiving around £4.33 million in compensation. Following his exit, Ten Hag issued a statement condemning the short-lived tenure, citing a lack of trust and patience from management as the primary reasons for his dismissal.

He expressed regret over the circumstances, emphasizing his commitment and the effort he put in, and thanked the supporters for their support.
