Scholes Names Surprising Best Signing of Summer, Snubs Liverpool’s New Stars
Paul Scholes Names His Unexpected Top Signings of the Summer
Paul Scholes has revealed his unexpected pick for the best signing of the recent transfer window, expressing that he would bring the player to Manchester United “tomorrow” if possible.
After the deadline closed, all 20 Premier League clubs combined spent a record-breaking £3.19 billion. Liverpool led the spending with £450 million, bolstering their squad with players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Alexander Isak. Other top spenders such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Manchester United each invested over £200 million to strengthen their teams for a competitive season.
However, Scholes didn’t highlight the obvious big-name signings but instead praised Manchester City’s new addition, Gianluigi Donnarumma. City acquired the Italian goalkeeper for just £26 million after PSG’s boss Luis Enrique decided to move him on. Scholes expressed high admiration for Donnarumma, stating, “That has to be the signing of the window… I’d have him at United any day.”
He further explained that he would love to see Donnarumma at Manchester United, adding, “For £40m, he’s incredible.” Scholes also commented on City’s strategy, suggesting that the goalkeeper’s skills fit the requirements of Pep Guardiola’s style, unlike other goalkeepers who may struggle with playing out from the back.
In other news, Scholes discussed Manchester United’s goalkeeper situation, noting that both Alan and Onana have faced challenges this season. United recently signed Senn Lammens from Royal Antwerp, hoping for an improvement, though Lammens is still inexperienced at 23. Scholes argued that Donnarumma would have been a more reliable choice.
Regarding United’s season, Scholes shared his views on the team’s struggles, highlighting a mixed start including a promising performance against Arsenal, a dull draw at Fulham, and a heavy loss to Grimsby Town. The subsequent win against Burnley helped claw back some confidence. Scholes also commented on the team’s manager, Ruben Amorim, praising his honesty but criticizing his candid remarks after the Grimsby defeat, which he found a bit damaging for the manager’s reputation.
