Status of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Faces Growing Opposition

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. staring straight ahead.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has encountered mounting criticism recently. Prominent figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders, have called for his resignation, with Sanders publishing an opinion piece in the New York Times urging him to step down. Additionally, nine former directors of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expressed concerns that Kennedy’s actions could threaten public health.

On Wednesday, over 1,000 current and former Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) staff members signed a letter demanding Kennedy’s resignation. They accused him of making health policies based on partisan interests rather than scientific evidence. The letter highlights several controversial actions, such as Mass layoffs within HHS, promotion of unproven measles treatments, backing Medicaid reimbursement cuts, and the firing of CDC officials like Susan Monarez, leading to the resignation of other top CDC staff.

The letter also criticizes Kennedy’s tendency to appoint political ideologues to key health positions, including vaccine skeptics like David Geier to investigate vaccine safety—despite the science debunking links between vaccines and autism. There’s also concern over recent FDA decisions to limit access to COVID vaccines. The signatories argue that if Kennedy refuses to resign, political leaders should replace him with someone committed to science-based health policy.

Although Kennedy’s supporters, such as HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon, claim he has achieved significant progress in improving public health, critics are unlikely to back down. Kennedy is scheduled to testify before the Senate Finance Committee soon, where lawmakers, including Senator Ron Wyden, have expressed concerns about transparency and communication issues within HHS.
