Ruben Amorim’s 10-Word Wa:rn:ing to Garnacho Before £40m Man Utd Exit
Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho Heads to Chelsea After Tensions and Disagreements
Recently, 21-year-old Alejandro Garnacho completed his £40 million transfer from Manchester United to Chelsea after prolonged negotiations. The Argentine winger, who had expressed a strong desire to join Chelsea over a month earlier, faced delays due to disagreements over potential swap deals and club negotiations. Despite multiple rejected offers from United, Chelsea managed to secure the deal with Garnacho signing a seven-year contract.
Garnacho fondly reflected on his time at Old Trafford, expressing gratitude for the five years he spent there: “This special chapter in my life now comes to an end. We have created moments that will stay with me forever.” However, his final months at United were marked by tension and frustration.
Relationship issues with coach Ruben Amorim escalated as early as December after the coach’s arrival, especially when Garnacho was omitted from squad selections for key matches. Although he regained the manager’s trust and made 58 appearances, their relationship deteriorated toward the season’s end. After being left on the bench for the Europa League final, Garnacho vented his frustrations in a post-match interview, leading to criticism from Amorim and a warning about his future negotiations.
As a result, Garnacho was placed in United’s so-called ‘bomb squad’—a group of players deemed unlikely to feature under Amorim—including Tyrell Malacia, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony. Of this group, Rashford and Antony secured transfers to Barcelona and Betis respectively, Sancho moved to Aston Villa, and Garnacho’s departure to Chelsea was the culmination of this upheaval.
Meanwhile, United invested heavily this transfer window, spending over £200 million on new players such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko, and recently Sene Lammens, who expressed his enthusiasm for joining the club and working under Ruben Amorim.
Looking ahead, Manchester United will resume their Premier League campaign after the international break with the Manchester derby at the Etihad, where both teams are expected to have new goalkeepers, including Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma for Manchester City.
