Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is dismissed by Bayer Leverkusen after only three matches
Bayer Leverkusen has terminated Erik ten Hag’s contract, just 62 days after appointing him as their head coach. The Dutch coach, who previously managed Manchester United, took over the Bundesliga club in May, succeeding Xabi Alonso, who left to manage Real Madrid.
Ten Hag’s start in Germany was challenging, earning only one point from two league games. The team lost their season opener 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim despite an early goal from former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah. They had previously advanced with a 4-0 victory over a fourth-tier side in the DFB-Pokal.
However, struggles persisted, especially in their recent match where they squandered a 3-1 lead against Werder Bremen, ending in a 3-3 draw after the visitors were reduced to 10 men. This result, coupled with earlier setbacks, left Leverkusen languishing in the lower half of the table.

The coach’s fate was sealed after a late-game collapse where Leverkusen conceded two late goals to draw 3-3 against Werder Bremen.
Following Saturday’s disappointment, Leverkusen dismissed ten Hag immediately. He commented post-match that the players were not yet fit enough and that the team needed to show more intensity to meet his standards. Key players such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Granit Xhaka left the club over the summer, adding to the rebuilding challenges.
Ten Hag’s tenure at Leverkusen was marked by a difficult pre-season, including a 5-1 loss to Flamengo’s youth team. He previously managed Manchester United, where he was dismissed in October after a poor start to the Premier League season while the club sat 14th in the standings.
