Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek Apologizes for US Open Hat Snatch

Polish CEO Apologizes for Incident at US Open

The CEO of a paving stone company has issued a public apology after a video showing him snatching a signed hat from a young fan went viral. Piotr Szczerek, managing director of Drogbruk, explained that he mistakenly believed the tennis player was handing the hat to him for his children amid the excitement of the match.

Szczerek expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging that he made a “serious mistake” and apologized to the boy, his family, and fans. The incident occurred shortly after the star player, Kamil Majchrzak, won his match against Russian ninth seed Karen Khachanov. Majchrzak, who was celebrating his victory, said he was caught up in the moment and misunderstood Szczerek’s gesture.

Majchrzak, who had just won his match, explained that the confusion arose in the heat of the moment. He noted that Szczerek, who sponsors his federation in Poland, was likely overwhelmed with emotion following his victory. The tennis star later met with the boy on Saturday, apologized, and presented him with a new signed hat and gifts, prompting smiles from the young fan.

Szczerek reflected on the incident, emphasizing that he has been involved in charitable efforts supporting children and youth for years. He pledged to become more active in initiatives that promote kindness and oppose violence and hate, aiming to rebuild trust through his actions.

He also clarified that he and his family have not made any statements regarding the incident prior to his public apology, countering false posts circulating online. The incident drew harsh criticism from his compatriots, who labeled him with terms like “scammer” and “shameful.”

Majchrzak stated that he was exhausted and overwhelmed, which contributed to the misunderstanding. He expressed hope that the situation served as a lesson in emotional control and expressed gratitude for the young fan’s understanding.
