Teacher of the Year Brandyn Hargrove Gets Probation After Sex Assault Guilty Plea

Ex-Teacher of the Year Pleads Guilty to Long-Standing Sexual Relationship with Student

A former “Teacher of the Year” has admitted to engaging in a continuous sexual relationship with one of her students, which began when the girl was just 15 years old. Brandyn Martin Hargrove was convicted on Wednesday of 12 criminal charges linked to her misconduct while teaching at Brazoswood High School in Clute, Texas.

She received a sentence of 10 years probation with an additional 10-year probationary period, meaning she will not serve time in prison. Her crimes involved grooming and a sexual relationship that lasted until the girl turned 17, according to court documents. The allegations include charges of sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child by contact and exposure, which classified as serious felonies with potential prison sentences.

Hargrove, who was once honored as Teacher of the Year, was involved in a sexual relationship that spanned nearly two years, beginning in 2007.

Her victim, now in her 30s, came forward in September 2023 to report the abuse, walking into a police station to disclose that her former teacher had assaulted her almost two decades earlier. Police Chief James Fitch said the investigation involved extensive efforts, including tracking down individuals connected to the victim from years ago, and the victim herself spoke during the court proceedings.

The victim delivered a heartfelt statement, confronting her abuser in court. She declared, “You didn’t just cross boundaries—you destroyed a person. Today, I transition from victim to survivor, from victim to victor.”

The charges against Hargrove included sexual assault and indecency of a child, with her family present during her conviction.

Hargrove’s family observed silently as she was convicted of multiple felonies, including sex assault of a child and indecency charges. She will be registered as a sex offender for life, and authorities emphasize that victims are encouraged to come forward, regardless of how much time has passed since the abuse occurred.

Chief Fitch highlighted the importance of justice, stating, “If victims decide to speak out years later, law enforcement will take their reports seriously and seek justice accordingly.” Following her arrest, Hargrove was dismissed from her teaching position earlier this year.
