Muchová Cries at US Open After Seeing Ex in Crowd
Karolína Muchová Breaks Down in Tears During US Open Match After Spotting Ex-Boyfriend in Crowd
The Czech tennis star Karolína Muchová became emotional during her recent US Open match after noticing her ex-boyfriend in the audience, whom she described as showing up at inappropriate places. While serving in her match against Sorana Cîrstea, Muchová momentarily froze, signaling distress, and had to wipe her face with a towel before continuing. She later explained that her reaction was unrelated to tennis and was caused by the presence of her ex.
“Opposite my bench, my ex-boyfriend sat down. He sometimes shows up where he shouldn’t. That startled me. I told him to leave, but he didn’t, although he eventually did. It was difficult to focus in that moment,” she said.
Despite the emotional toll of the interruption, Muchová managed to win the match. She affirmed she had not filed any official report or requested restrictions on her ex’s attendance. She later said she was doing okay after defeating fellow Czech Linda Nosková and that she was trying to move forward.
Other women’s tennis players have faced similar disruptions. Earlier this year, Emma Raducanu was visibly upset when she recognized a man who had previously harassed her and was under a restraining order, leading her to admit she couldn’t see the ball clearly and struggled to breathe during her match.
The USTA stated that player safety is a priority, working closely with law enforcement to ensure a secure environment for athletes and respond appropriately to threats, both online and in person.
Harassment and unwanted encounters remain a concern, with tennis history marked by extreme cases such as Monica Seles being stabbed on court in 1993. Prominent players like Martina Hingis and Serena Williams have also spoken openly about persistent harassment issues. As Muchová prepares for her next match, she aims to focus on her game despite recent unsettling experiences.
