De Ligt Reveals Man United’s Feelings on Ruben Amorim After Grimsby Defeat

Matthijs de Ligt on Manchester United’s Support for Ruben Amorim Following Grimsby Defeat

Manchester United players are united in their backing of manager Ruben Amorim and have accepted responsibility for the club’s historic loss to Grimsby Town, according to Matthijs de Ligt.

The team’s unexpected defeat to the League Two side on penalties, coupled with Amorim’s comments after the match, had cast doubt over his future at Old Trafford. However, after bouncing back with a 3-2 victory against Burnley, de Ligt emphasized the players’ acknowledgment of their role in the loss.

“As players, we hold ourselves accountable for the results,” de Ligt stated. “Everyone talks about the manager, but after Grimsby, we looked at each other and agreed that our performance was not acceptable.”

He added, “It’s unfair to put the blame on the manager. It’s mostly on us, and we’re aware of that. We all still support him, and he supports us, which makes the team stronger. This victory has only reinforced that mindset.”

Ruben Amorim secured his first win of the season with Saturday’s 3-2 triumph over Burnley, just days after United’s exit from the Carabao Cup against Grimsby. De Ligt reflected on the team’s response, saying, “There wasn’t much need for discussion because everyone understood how we felt. Losing in such a manner was tough, and winning today was a relief.”

Captain Bruno Fernandes played a crucial role by scoring a penalty in the 97th minute, bouncing back from a miss in a recent match against Fulham.

“I was disappointed in myself for missing the penalty, but I’m glad Bruno stepped up and scored,” de Ligt remarked. “Ultimately, what mattered most was getting the win, even if we know we can improve in certain areas.”
