Chicago Mayor Bans Police Cooperation with Federal Immigration Agents Amid Trump Crackdown
Chicago Mayor Bans Cooperation with Federal Immigration Raids
Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson has issued an executive order directing city law enforcement agencies not to cooperate with federal immigration agents or military personnel, including the National Guard, amid threats of upcoming immigration raids.
Johnson, a prominent critic of the federal government, emphasized urgency, stating, “We do not have the luxury of time.” The order clarifies procedures for local officers, requiring them to stay in uniform, identify themselves, adhere to body camera protocols, and avoid face masks to distinguish themselves from federal agents. It also urges federal personnel to follow similar guidelines.
Johnson explained the order as a blueprint for residents and officials to oppose what he described as “tyranny,” especially as credible reports suggest military activities could occur in the city within days. President Trump has indicated that Chicago could be the next site after deploying National Guard and DHS officers to Washington, DC, earlier this month to combat crime.
Additionally, government officials like Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan have threatened to send immigration enforcement to other sanctuary cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle.
The move from Chicago drew criticism from the White House, which called it a “showy stunt” meant to undermine federal efforts to reduce crime. The White House’s spokeswoman accused local officials of politicizing a law enforcement matter and urged cooperation instead of partisan displays.
Johnson also called on President Trump to cease deployment of military forces in the city, warning that the administration would pursue legal action if necessary. He reaffirmed that local law enforcement would abide by local laws and protocols during any operations.
