Garnacho Watches Chelsea Debut After £40M Manchester United Transfer

Alejandro Garnacho Observes Chelsea Debut from the Stands Ahead of £40m Transfer

Alejandro Garnacho was present in the stands at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, watching his future team-mates in action as Chelsea faced Fulham. The 21-year-old winger is nearing a transfer from Manchester United to Chelsea for a fee believed to be around £40 million, following a successful medical and a seven-year contract agreement.

This deal sets a new record for Manchester United, making Garnacho their most expensive youth academy graduate sale, surpassing the previous £24.5 million received for David Beckham in 2003. The move also contains a 10% sell-on clause for United. Chelsea had initially offered £25 million, but negotiations resulted in the final fee.

Garnacho, who joined United’s youth academy from Atletico Madrid in 2020, played 144 matches for the senior team, scoring 26 goals and contributing 22 assists. He helped secure the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. However, he fell out of favor under manager Ruben Amorim toward the end of last season, leading to his departure.

Previously announced as being part of United’s ‘bomb squad’, Garnacho did not feature in pre-season matches. His departure comes after expressing frustration, notably when introduced late in the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in May, which seemed to accelerate his exit from Old Trafford.

Joining Chelsea, Garnacho is expected to compete for a starting position on the left wing with fellow summer signing Jamie Gittens. He is among several new arrivals at Stamford Bridge, including Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jorrel Hato, and Brazilian teenager Estevao. His first appearance at Chelsea’s home ground came just a day after sporting freshly bleached hair, signaling his readiness for a new chapter.
