Progress at Dundee Under Pressley’s Leadership

Surprisingly, Steven Pressley’s tenure as Dundee manager shows promising signs after a challenging start. His appointment in June was met with skepticism due to his last managerial role ending in 2019 and the club’s decision to replace Tony Docherty, which raised eyebrows.

During his first public appearance, Pressley was candid about his ambitions, stating, “If you’re expecting a manager with a trophy-winning record, I might not be the right choice.” Despite initial criticism, the team has demonstrated notable improvement lately.

Early struggles included two heavy defeats in the Premier Sports Cup against Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic, dashing hopes of reaching the knockout stages. These setbacks raised doubts about his position before the start of the Premiership season.

However, recent performances have been encouraging. After a tough opener against Hibernian, Dundee showed resilience, earning a hard-fought point against Rangers and a disciplined display at Kilmarnock. Their defensive solidity is improving under Pressley’s guidance, minimizing the chinks in their armor.

The team remains heavily reliant on striker Simon Murray, who is expected to be pivotal again. Meanwhile, Dundee United, under Jim Goodwin, faces its own difficulties. Despite a strong start last year, their defense has become fragile, conceding 11 goals in seven matches, often due to lapses on set pieces.

Goodwin has blamed injuries for his squad’s struggles, having to juggle 14 new players amidst a relentless fixture schedule. A poor result this weekend could see them fall further behind their rivals before the international break.
