Dennis Schröder Targets Racial Abuse at EuroBasket; Fan Banned by FIBA
Germany Wins EuroBasket Group Match Despite Racist Incident Involving Dennis Schröder
Veteran NBA player Dennis Schröder led Germany to a 107-88 victory over Lithuania in the EuroBasket group stage, scoring a game-high 26 points. The match was held at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland. However, Schröder was subjected to racist abuse during the game, particularly before halftime.
According to reports, two individuals were identified as the alleged offenders, with one being ejected from the arena after video footage confirmed their involvement. The offending individual has been banned from participating in the remainder of the tournament. FIBA officials condemned the incident, stating that they are actively working with local authorities to investigate further.
Schröder, who serves as Germany’s team captain, spoke out about the incident, stating, “Making monkey noises, that’s something I don’t respect. Racism doesn’t belong in any sport. That’s completely unacceptable.”
Schröder, approaching his 13th NBA season, recently signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Sacramento Kings. Earlier this year, he controversially compared the league’s trade system to “modern slavery,” criticizing the lack of control players have over their careers.
This incident overshadowed the game but did not impact Germany’s performance; the team secured its third consecutive win in the group phase and has advanced to the EuroBasket Round of 16 in Riga, Latvia.
