Barcelona Legend Urges Fermin Lopez to Skip Chelsea Over £43M Midfielder Talks
Barcelona Legend Advises Fermin Lopez to Remain at the Club Amid Chelsea Interest
Barcelona icon Sergio Busquets has recommended that Fermin Lopez stay with the Catalan club despite recent interest from Chelsea. The Blues reportedly reached out earlier this week regarding a potential transfer for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who played a significant role for Hansi Flick’s team last season.
Lopez has been on the bench for Barcelona’s first two league matches of the current season, which may limit his playing time. A move to Stamford Bridge could offer him more regular starts, a significant advantage in a World Cup year. Despite this, Busquets believes Lopez’s best interests lie in remaining at Barcelona, although he acknowledges that transferring could benefit Lopez’s development.
Busquets remarked that leaving La Masia, the club’s youth academy, often grants players a different perspective on wearing the Barcelona badge and fulfilling their dreams of first-team football. He emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with the player, who must consider their personal and professional growth.
Lopez made 46 appearances last season, scoring eight goals and providing 10 assists. His notable contributions included six goals and five assists in La Liga, which helped Barcelona secure the domestic league title. He participated briefly in Barcelona’s season opener but was mostly on the bench in the recent victories.
Barcelona’s depth in midfield includes players like Frankie de Jong, Dani Olmo, and Marc Bernal. Lopez also has experience at the international level, debuting for Spain last summer and featuring in Euro 2024. However, he has not been called up since then.
Facilitating a sale could ease Barcelona’s financial challenges and potentially enable the registration of players like Wojciech Szczesny, Roony Bardgjhi, and Gerard Martin. Ultimately, the club’s management has indicated they support Lopez’s decision, whether he stays or moves elsewhere.
