Israeli Hostages, Including Hero from Oct. 7, Found Dead

Recovery of Hostage Remains and Declaration of Gaza as a Combat Zone

Israeli authorities announced the recovery of the remains of two more hostages from Gaza, describing Gaza City as a “dangerous combat zone.”

The remains of Ilan Weiss, a 56-year-old hailed as a hero for his bravery during the Hamas attack on Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7, were found alongside another unidentified hostage. The recovery was carried out during a joint military and Shin Bet security operation in Gaza 693 days after they were taken hostage.

Ilan Weiss was commended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called him a “hero” for defending his family and community during the assault. Weiss’s wife, Shiri, and daughter, Noga, were initially captured but released in November 2023 during a cease-fire agreement. Israeli officials now believe Weiss was murdered and kidnapped by Hamas amid the October 7 massacre.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed admiration for Weiss’s courage and the resilience of his family, who continue to strive for his return.

The location of the body recovery within Gaza remains unspecified. Currently, there are 48 hostages in Gaza, with about 20 believed to still be alive, according to reports.

Israeli strike on Gaza
Gaza City declared a “combat zone” as Israel escalates military operations.

Following international pressure, Israel implemented measures last month to facilitate aid delivery to Palestinians in Gaza, including daily 10-hour ceasefires in certain areas and new aid operations. However, the IDF stated that while aid efforts will continue, military forces will also conduct offensive operations against terror groups to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians.

Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to returning all kidnapped individuals, living or dead, stating, “We will not rest or be silent until we bring all our people home.”
