Ex-Chiropractor Sentenced to Life for Poisoning His Wife with Lead-Tainted Vitamins
A man previously working as a chiropractor in Alabama has received a life sentence after deliberately poisoning his wife during a bitter divorce dispute. Brian Thomas Mann, 36, was convicted of attempting to murder his 26-year-old wife, Hannah Pettey, by contaminating her vitamins with lead over several months.
Pettey began taking the vitamins in summer 2021 amidst stressful divorce proceedings, aiming to boost her immune system. However, she soon faced severe health issues, leading to a two-month hospitalization. It was discovered she had eight times the normal lead levels in her body, necessitating intensive treatment, and she experienced a 40-pound weight loss. Despite recovery, she was left with a significant lead burden in her bloodstream.
Evidence revealed Mann used leftover lead from his office, where his remodeling project involved lining an X-ray room with lead sheets, to taint the vitamins given to his wife. Witnesses testified that Mann initially cooperated with police, handing over her vitamins but later tried to manipulate the investigation by claiming he suspected he had ingested lead himself.
Authorities launched an inquiry when high lead levels in Pettey’s system prompted suspicion. Scans and tests confirmed the presence of lead in Mann’s colon, and an anonymous tip later implicated Mann’s office remodel as the source of the lead contamination. It emerged that Mann’s motive was to benefit financially—had Pettey died, he would have received $1 million in life insurance claims.
In September 2022, Mann was arrested, and the judge sentenced him to life in prison, citing his blatant disregard for his wife’s safety. The prosecution described Mann’s actions as a disturbing glimpse into his character, highlighting his obsession with money over human life.
This case underscores the dangerous extremes of marital conflict and the importance of thorough investigations into unexplained medical conditions tied to malicious intent.
