Sen. Joni Ernst Calls for Audit Over $400K in Fraudulent Unemployment Benefits Exposed
Call for an Audit of Fraudulent Unemployment Benefits Among Government Employees
Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa has requested a federal agency to investigate how many government workers are simultaneously receiving unemployment benefits fraudulently while still earning their salaries. Her concern was prompted by discovering several cases where employees had misappropriated nearly half a million dollars.
In a letter addressed to the acting Deputy Inspector General of the Labor Department, Michael C. Mikulka, Ernst cited over $405,000 misused by just five federal employees involved in double-dipping. For example, one employee at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Health Administration, who had been promoted multiple times, collected more than $130,000 in unemployment benefits over six years.
Additionally, a full-time Social Security Administration worker was found to have illegally received over $30,000 during 2020-2021. Other cases include a USPS employee defrauding across eight states and collecting more than $109,000 via unemployment schemes, and another USPS worker convicted of embezzling over $90,000 through similar means.
Ernst emphasized that these abuses could be more widespread than currently known, stating that “thousands of bureaucrats are ripping off taxpayers in plain sight.” She criticized the lack of action on previous calls for investigation and highlighted resistance from some officials to grant access to federal databases that could uncover such fraud, referencing opposition to initiatives meant to combat this criminal activity.
The senator’s efforts are part of a broader push to prevent government employees from benefiting illegally from unemployment programs while remaining on the payroll. Despite millions allocated for fraud detection, Ernst warned that a lack of oversight allows these schemes to persist, costing taxpayers dearly. She noted that the problem is compounded by stolen identities, which in some cases have led to government workers being falsely accused of fraud.
Ongoing Efforts and Challenges
While some government employees are impacted by identity theft, Ernst’s investigation aims to identify and eliminate abuses, ensuring that the government protects taxpayer dollars and maintains integrity in benefits programs.
