Tonight’s Carabao Cup Draw Split: Before Grimsby vs Man United & After, Top Teams Kept Apart
Tonight’s Carabao Cup Draw Will Be Split Into Two Phases Due to Unique Rules
Fans will notice a new approach for the third round of the Carabao Cup, with two separate draws scheduled to determine the matchups for the next stage.
The third-round fixtures will take place over two weeks, starting September 15 and September 22. This scheduling overlaps with Champions League fixtures in the week commencing September 15 and Europa League matches the following week, creating a busy period for involved clubs.
To prevent schedule conflicts with UEFA competitions, which cannot be rescheduled, organizers have implemented special rules for this round. Clubs participating in European tournaments will be kept apart, ensuring they do not face each other at this stage. This allows the competition to proceed smoothly without disrupting other league or cup fixtures.
The round involves 32 teams, including 23 winners from the second round plus nine Premier League clubs competing in Europe.

Initially, a pre-draw will determine whether the eight European clubs will host or visit their opponents. This pre-draw occurs before the match between Grimsby Town and Manchester United. Once the home and away sides are decided, the main draw proceeds, alternating between European-qualified clubs and the remaining teams. The final eight fixtures will then be drawn exclusively from non-European sides.
