Liverpool’s Late Winners Hide Defensive Flaws: Konate, Reinforcements & Wirtz Insights
Early Challenges and Promising Signs for Liverpool’s Season
Despite a rocky start to their title defense, Liverpool has managed to secure two narrow victories, thanks to late goals from Hugo Ekitike and Rio Ngumoha. The latter’s strike in the 100th minute not only made him Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer but also kept their winning streak alive after just two games.
The Reds’ dramatic wins indicate a fighting spirit, but underlying defensive issues have emerged. They have conceded six goals in three competitive fixtures this season, including a heavy defeat in the Community Shield. Last year, it took until late October to reach six goals conceded, highlighting a shift in their defensive stability.
Analytical data shows that Liverpool’s defense, which was solid last season and the foundation of their success, is currently struggling with faster counter-attacks and individual errors. Ibrahima Konate, in particular, has been underperforming, losing duels and missing key moments, raising questions about his form and future amid interest from top clubs. His partner, Virgil van Dijk, has fared better in aerial duels, but the overall defensive cohesion remains a concern.
New signings like left-back Milos Kerkez and midfielder Florian Wirtz have shown mixed performances. Kerkez was beaten easily in the air at St James’ Park, while Wirtz, despite some criticism, covers more ground than many of his teammates, indicating his hard work.
Midfield stability is also an issue, with key players like Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch yet to settle due to injuries and suspensions. This instability has increased the number of conceding chances, especially from counter-attacks, a vulnerability Liverpool must address if they want to defend their title successfully.
Although manager Jurgen Klopp remains optimistic about the team’s performances, he recognizes the need to tighten the defense and learn from early mistakes. With some adjustments, Liverpool aims to improve their resilience and continue their chase for silverware this season.
