Emma Heming Reflects on Her Marriage with Bruce Willis Before His Dementia Diagnosis

Emma Heming, Bruce Willis’s wife, revealed in a recent interview that she questioned the status of their marriage prior to his diagnosis with dementia. She noted that the actor, typically very talkative and lively, had become quieter and more reserved, often appearing subdued in family gatherings.

“He was less engaged, and when the family gathered, he’d just melt a little,” she shared, expressing concern about the changes she observed. Heming initially thought Bruce’s hearing difficulties, which started during the filming of the first “Die Hard,” might be the cause of his distance. She recalled feeling alarmed by his emotional withdrawal, describing it as “scary” and feeling disconnected from the warmth he usually showed.

Despite attempts to discuss their concerns, Heming said Willis often dismissed these conversations. When doctors eventually diagnosed him, his family learned there was no cure, only acceptance. She expressed her shock, recalling how she felt as if she was “free-falling” upon hearing the diagnosis, which she couldn’t even pronounce at first.

In March 2022, the family announced that Willis would step away from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia. Later, it was revealed he was battling frontotemporal dementia, a condition affecting speech, personality, and behavior. Heming shared how difficult the news was, describing the moment she felt as if she was “free-falling,” and described her efforts to adapt to her husband’s declining ability to communicate.

She emphasized that her family is learning to communicate with Willis in new ways, even as he continues to lose his speech. Heming also pointed out that Willis remains a devoted father to their daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, and shares other children with his ex-wife, Demi Moore.
