Ukrainian Refugee, 23, Murdered in North Carolina by Homeless Offender
Ukrainian Refugee Fatally Stabbed at North Carolina Train Station
A 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee recently arrived in the United States was murdered at a light rail station in Charlotte, North Carolina, last Friday evening. The woman, identified as Iryna Zarutska, was attacked at the East/West Boulevard station in the South End area, suffering multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead shortly after the attack.
Family and community members shared that Zarutska came to the U.S. seeking safety from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with hopes for a new beginning. A crowdfunding campaign was established to support her family during this difficult time.
The investigation revealed that the suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and has been charged with first-degree murder. Brown has a lengthy criminal history, including arrests for felony theft, robbery, and threats, dating back to 2011. He is currently homeless and served prison time for a previous armed robbery.
Authorities noted that Brown has pending charges related to misuse of 911 from earlier this year, when he claimed someone had implanted a “man-made” device controlling his actions. During police questioning, he reportedly insisted that he believed a device inside his body was influencing his behavior and wanted officers to investigate it.
Details surrounding the events leading up to the stabbing remain unclear. Authorities indicated that officers responded to the scene after the incident, which appeared to occur on or near the platform. Brown later called 911 himself after becoming upset with police, leading to his arrest. The case is still under investigation.
