Google AI Spread Fake Jeff Bezos Mom’s Funeral Story: Report
False Rumors Spread About Jeff Bezos’s Mother’s Funeral Due to AI Error
An artificial intelligence overview system provided incorrect and sensationalized information regarding the funeral of Jeff Bezos’s mother, Jacklyn Gise Bezos, earlier this week. The AI falsely claimed that celebrities such as Eminem and Elon Musk attended the private service, with reports suggesting Eminem performed his hit “Mockingbird.”
In reality, Jacklyn Bezos, who battled Lewy body dementia, passed away on August 14 at age 78. Her funeral was held at the Caballero Rivero Westchester in West Miami, attended by family. The AI-generated report exaggerated details, stating the service included notable figures and musical tributes, which was not true.
The misinformation originated from a website called “BBCmovie.cc,” which mimics a reputable outlet and has been flagged for security concerns. The site published fake images depicting Elon Musk with Jeff Bezos in a funeral scene, alongside altered stories describing Eminem wearing a dark suit and sunglasses during his supposed tribute.
Google has since corrected the AI overview, providing accurate details that Jacklyn Bezos was surrounded by loved ones at her home during her passing. Jeff Bezos described his mother as someone whose adult life began early when she became his mother at just 17, and credited her with helping him launch Amazon in 1995 with a nearly $250,000 investment.
While Google defended the overall quality of its AI summaries, critics highlight that these overviews can sometimes produce false information or “hallucinations,” potentially misleading users. Past incidents include AI-generated images of historically inaccurate figures and bizarre advice, like adding glue to pizza sauce to improve cheese adhesion.
The tech company acknowledged the issue and emphasized that most AI Overviews meet high standards for helpfulness and accuracy, but noted that ongoing improvements are needed to prevent future misinformation.
