FEMA Employees Raise Alarm Over Funding Cuts and Political Interference

Over 180 current and former FEMA employees have issued an urgent warning to Congress regarding the Trump administration’s recent actions impacting the agency’s capacity to respond to disasters. In a letter dubbed the “Katrina Declaration,” they highlight significant concerns over staffing reductions, leadership appointments, and censorship of climate science, which they believe impair FEMA’s effectiveness—especially during the ongoing hurricane season.

The employees criticized efforts to remove experienced staff, promote unqualified leaders, and reassign personnel to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), threatening those who resist with termination. They also pointed out a notable cut of over $1 billion from FEMA’s disaster preparedness programs, describing such reductions as reckless and detrimental, given the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters.

Additionally, the letter accuses the administration of suppressing climate science by eliminating critical risk assessment tools like the Future Risk Index from FEMA’s website. The workers argue that ignoring climate change endangers communities across the country, as destructive events become more frequent and intense.

As evidence of the impact of these policies, FEMA rescue efforts during recent catastrophic floods in Texas faced delays, with some reports indicating a three-day postponement in response times. The employees blame leadership that questions FEMA’s purpose and prioritizes cost-cutting over public safety.

In response, FEMA’s Acting Press Secretary highlighted the agency’s successful rapid response during the Texas floods and emphasized ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency and accountability. They proclaimed that such changes are necessary to ensure taxpayer dollars reach those in need, despite resistance from elements within the agency committed to maintaining the status quo.
