Four Suspects Charged in Bronx Shooting That Left One Dead and Multiple Injured
Four individuals have been formally charged following a violent shooting at a Bronx park that resulted in one death, an injury to a teenage girl, and three others wounded during a basketball event. The incident occurred near Haffen Park just before 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Among those arrested are two minors, aged 16 and 17, facing serious charges including murder, attempted murder, gang assault, and weapons possession. Two adults, Daeven Reyes and Robert Royal, aged 20 and 25 respectively, are also implicated, with Reyes additionally charged with gang assault.
Emergency services responded to the chaos on Burke Avenue and Wickham Avenue, finding Jaceil Banks, a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest, who was later pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital. A 17-year-old girl, Anthonaya Campbell, was shot in the face by a stray bullet and remains in critical condition. Other victims—including a man and woman both shot in the back and a man shot in the arm—were taken to hospitals by private transport and are in stable condition.
The mother of the injured teen, Jennifer Talbot, was celebrating her PhD graduation when she received devastating news. She described seeing her daughter injured, with a tracheostomy tube and a bullet lodged in her eye, and was told she might need to prepare for the worst. Her daughter is currently receiving a blood transfusion in hopes of stabilizing her condition.
Law enforcement reports a surge in shootings across the 47th Precinct—up 50% this year, with 21 shootings compared to 14 at this time last year. Murders have doubled, rising from four to eight, although recent violence including Saturday’s event has not been included in these statistics.
City officials acknowledge the increase in violence, with Mayor Eric Adams emphasizing targeted patrols and community programs rather than curfews. Local leaders, including Bronx City Councilman Oswald Feliz, are voicing concerns and calling for increased police presence to prevent such tragedies, especially as gang-related violence appears to be a contributing factor.
