Rhode Island AG’s Special Assistant Devon Flanagan on Leave After Viral Arrest Video
Rhode Island Assistant Attorney General Placed on Leave After Viral Arrest Incident
A Rhode Island assistant attorney general has been suspended without pay following an incident where she appeared to attempt using her authority to avoid arrest. She was recorded warning officers that they would “regret” arresting her during an altercation over trespassing charges.
Devon Flanagan, a Special Assistant Attorney General, was taken into custody after resisting police efforts and making remarks indicating her status. She told officers, “I’m an AG! I’m an AG!” and warned them they would regret her being incarcerated. Video footage also shows her attempting to claim that police should turn off body cameras upon her request, a statement she later admitted was a mistake.
Following her arrest, the Attorney General’s office announced that Flanagan would go on unpaid leave starting Monday while the department reviews the matter. Details regarding the duration of her suspension and potential disciplinary actions remain pending.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha criticized Flanagan’s behavior, calling it “inexcusable” and indicating strong sanctions could be imminent. He acknowledged that although her record prior to this was unblemished and she was highly regarded, her actions have caused significant damage.
Neronha also suggested that alcohol may have played a role in her conduct but emphasized that this does not excuse her behavior. He mentioned that Flanagan has expressed remorse and is working to make amends, including apologizing to the Newport Police Department.
The incident has sparked discussions about professionalism among legal staff and the importance of maintaining integrity, regardless of personal or professional challenges. The department continues to evaluate the case and has not yet finalized its disciplinary decision.
